Praying the Scriptures Journal Method

The following is the leader’s post to the CCEL Discussion Group Praying the Scriptures, defining the purpose of the group and the method:

We are endeavoring to use scripture as the springboard to prayer.  These are God-breathed words that are life and breath to the follower of Christ. The act of journaling such prayers focuses the mind and directs the heart into deeps that would remain unseen if it wasn’t for such lingered time in HIS word.

Mdm. Guyon speaks of “praying the word” in her little book “Experiencing God through Prayer” that is a spiritual treasure.

Wayne Cordero writes in “The Divine Mentor”:

“A journal is simply a notebook were you can write down what God says to you.  That’s all that journalizing means–writing it down!  Let me repeat our opening Scripture of this chapter:

‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, say: “Write in a book all the words I have spoken to you.”  (Jeremiah 30:2)

“Take notes on what God is saying. Treat every word like pure gold. This will help you more than I can begin to describe. Just remember that your journal is not  diary. It is God speaking to you as you daily set aside forty minutes for devotions. It is not a place for random thoughts (although this can be a therapeutic exercise at another level).  Your journal is the garnering of wisdom, the gathering place of divine insight you’ll receive from the mentors of the ages.”

But the blessing doesn’t end there. It really begins when such times in God’s word is shared with the body of Christ. The insights given in prayer-journaling are so much deeper and richer than through mere study alone. I find the study of doctrine to be so dry.  But when prayed, the scriptures that we used to view merely as “doctrine” take on new life.  And because scripture is God’s word, it tends to be multi faceted, multi-layered.  No one person, no one scholar, can penetrate these words. It takes the whole body of Christ, engaged in scripture, to uncover some of the untold riches found in our LORD Jesus

“That you may have the power and be strong to comprehend and grasp WITH ALL THE SAINTS what is the breadth and length and height and depth of it (God’s love).”  Ephesians 3:19

It takes “all the saints” to comprehend the breadth and length and height and depth” of God’s love, and this goes for scripture as well, which is a testimony of God’s love in Christ.

What we are offering here is a format “SOAP” that is an inducement to praying scripture.
S. Write the scripture down.
O. Write an observation.
A. Write an application (if found).
P. Pray the word.

And then share what you have written. Ephesians is the highest of Paul’s epistles.  Even Peter says that Paul has written some things that are hard to understand. (2 Peter 3:14-16).   But together, by study and prayer, we become vessels of illumination by the Holy Spirit, that sheds light on the unmatchable riches found in Christ Jesus our LORD.

I hope this was helpful.
